Addiction

I gamble online

Apps or sports betting or day trading as gambling and the loss has been bigger than you've been able to admit.

What this looks like

The phone is the casino. The app is always open. Sports betting, online poker, slots, day trading you’re using as gambling, crypto positions sized to the amount of dopamine they produce. You’ve lost more than you’ve been admitting. You’ve started chasing the losses. The next big win has been the thing pulling you back. The next big win hasn’t arrived.

Online gambling is more accessible than any other addiction in history. The accessibility is part of why it’s so hard.

What you’ve already tried

The next session arrived.

Why online is harder than in-person

Online gambling is in your pocket. The friction is zero. The intermittent reinforcement is perfectly engineered. The push notifications are designed to bring you back. The app interface is designed to maximize the dopamine response. You’re dealing with a system that has been built by people whose entire job is to make you keep playing.

You very likely came to gambling for a specific reason: a sense of agency, escape, the feeling of being alive that the rest of your life wasn’t producing. The reason is real. The gambling has been doing the work the reason required. The losses haven’t extinguished the use because the gambling isn’t really about winning money. It’s about the experience of playing.

For the broader framework, see I have an addiction or I gamble .

Your gambling is one tool. It has been doing work other tools can do without the bleeding.

How we work with it

Strategic therapy treats your phone as a delivery system, not the problem. We work on what the playing has been giving you (the rush, the agency, the feeling of being in the game) and on the routines that put the app in your hand twenty times a day. Your pull to bet weakens because we cut off the supply line that’s been feeding it.

You’ll put the phone down because the system that has been keeping it in your hand stops running.

When you're ready to put the phone down
