Addiction

I'm addicted to porn

The use has changed how you function elsewhere and you've started to suspect that the cultural debate about whether porn is fine has been letting you avoid the question.

What this looks like

You use porn daily. Sometimes multiple times a day. The amount of time it consumes has been increasing. You’ve been escalating to content that you wouldn’t have used five years ago to get the same response. You’ve been using it at times you shouldn’t (work, between meetings, when you should be sleeping). You’ve been hiding it from your partner. The use has changed how you function: with your partner, at work, in your overall mood.

The cultural argument about whether porn is fine has been the wrong question for you. Your own specific use is what you’re actually looking at.

What you’ve already tried

The use kept holding.

Why this is structurally addiction

Porn produces a specific neurochemical response on intermittent reinforcement, which is the most addictive schedule there is. The brain calibrates to the response. The calibration produces the need to escalate to maintain the same effect. The escalation is one of the markers of dependence.

You very likely came to porn for a real reason: stress relief, escape, sexual development that didn’t have other outlets, a relationship that wasn’t working. The reason is real. The porn has been doing the work the reason required. Stopping the porn doesn’t eliminate the reason. The reason is what we work on.

For the related patterns, see Porn ruined my sex life . For the broader framework, see I have an addiction .

Your porn use is one tool. It has been doing work other tools can do without the cost to your relationship and your wiring.

How we work with it

Strategic therapy stays out of the morality and addresses the function. Whatever the porn has been quietly handling for you (stress, escape, a sex life that hasn’t been working, a part of yourself that hasn’t had anywhere else to go), we address that directly. Your use drops because the appetite the use was actually feeding stops being unmet.

You’ll use less because what’s been driving the use stops being ignored.
