Eating
You've been losing the same weight for years and gaining it back and the cycle has its own life now.
You go on the diet. You lose weight. You feel good. You go off the diet. You gain it back, plus extra. You go on the next diet. You lose less this time. You gain more back. The cycle has been running for years. Each round trains the next round to be harder.
The dieting isn’t producing weight loss. It’s been producing the next regain.
The cycle keeps cycling.

The mechanism is partly biological and partly behavioral. Restriction triggers the body’s response to scarcity, which slows metabolism, increases hunger, and primes the system to store more when food becomes available. Each cycle teaches the body to be more efficient at storing. Each cycle also teaches you that the diet is a temporary state you’ll go off, which means the period after the diet is the binge waiting to happen.
You very likely came up with a particular relationship to your body and weight that taught you they were under your moral control, and the failure to control them has felt like a referendum on you rather than on the framework. You may have grown up with parents who dieted, and you learned the cycle as the way to be acceptable. You may have absorbed cultural messages that frame any weight as a problem and any diet as the solution, and you’ve been running the script ever since.
For the related patterns, see I binge eat or I hate my body . For the broader framework, see I have an eating problem .
The diet is the system. The system has been producing the result you’re trying to escape.
Strategic therapy treats the diet-then-regain pattern as the predictable output of the diet itself. We work on what you do during the loss phase that primes the regain, and on what you do during the regain phase that loads the next diet. The weight question stops being managed by a cycle that has been guaranteeing the next round.
The next diet doesn’t start. Your weight stops being a project you keep restarting.
