The producing has been so reliable that it took you years to notice it was a producing rather than a knowing. Now you’ve noticed, and the absence under the answers is louder than the answers.

You very likely came up in a household where what you wanted was either inconvenient or invisible. You may have grown up with a parent who needed you to want what they wanted, and you absorbed the lesson that wanting your own thing was a kind of betrayal. You may have built your adult life around external metrics, and the metrics have shaped what you thought you wanted. You may have been the kid whose preferences got overridden so consistently that your wanting system stopped producing distinct signals because nothing came of producing them.
The introspective question “what do I want” doesn’t reach the system that’s been suppressing the wanting. The system has been faster than the question. By the time you’ve asked, the system has produced an acceptable answer.

The wanting is there. The system that’s been overriding it is what we change.
Strategic therapy stops asking you the question that hasn’t been working. Instead we change what you’ve been doing in the small daily moments where wanting gets converted into the acceptable answer before you’ve noticed wanting anything at all. The override system slows down. The signals start arriving early enough that you can hear them before they’ve already been packaged for somebody else.
Your wants become detectable. The producing-the-acceptable-answer reflex stops being faster than your own preferences.
