The pressure to make it good ruins it before it starts and the trying to relax has been making the pressure worse.
You’re with them. You can feel the audition starting. You’re tracking what you’re doing, how it’s landing, whether you’ll be able to perform. The tracking interferes with the performing. Your body responds slowly or not at all. You compensate by working harder. The harder you work, the more the audition is the thing happening.
You’re trying to do voluntarily what arousal does on its own when the trying stops.
The audition keeps starting.
You very likely came up with a particular relationship to performance that doesn’t allow for the body to fail. You may have grown up with messages about masculinity or femininity that tied your value to sexual capability, and any failure has felt like a referendum on you. You may have lived through one early sexual encounter that didn’t go well, and your nervous system filed the next encounter under the category of moments to never repeat. You may have absorbed cultural scripts that frame sex as a performance with stakes, and your body has been responding to the stakes rather than to your partner.
Arousal is involuntary. It runs on the absence of monitoring. The moment you start watching whether your body is doing what it should, the watching is the thing happening, and the watching kills the response. The trying is the wall.

The audition is the system. Stop the audition, the response comes back.
Strategic therapy ends the audition by removing the test. We agree on a window where the outcome you’ve been watching for is off the table, and you cannot pass or fail because no one is being graded. Your body, freed from being asked to perform, starts producing the response that the audition had been blocking.
No exam, no exam anxiety. The body remembers it knows how.
