Sleep

I have nightmares

You wake up most nights from the same kind of dream and you can't make the mornings normal anymore.

What this looks like

You wake up from the nightmare. Sometimes you’ve had the same scenario before. Sometimes it’s a new one with the same shape. The morning arrives heavy because the night was heavy. The themes connect, loosely or directly, to something in your waking life that hasn’t been resolved.

You’re processing in the dream what your waking mind didn’t have time for.

What you’ve already tried

The nightmares continued.

Why “it’s just a dream” hasn’t reached it

You very likely have material that hasn’t been processed. You may have lived through something specific that nobody helped you work through. You may have absorbed years of stress or grief that you’ve been carrying around without naming it. You may have come from a household where strong feelings weren’t acceptable, so you trained yourself to put them away during the day. You may have built a life that runs on staying busy enough to outpace what you’d otherwise have to feel.

You’re using the dream to do the processing your waking mind doesn’t make room for. Telling yourself it’s only a dream addresses your relationship to the dream. It doesn’t address what the dream is working on. The material keeps pushing for processing, and the night is the only time it has access.

For related patterns, see I have flashbacks and I have nightmares about something that happened for the trauma-specific version.

The processing has been overdue. We work on what’s been waiting to be processed.

How we work with it

Strategic therapy gives the processing a daytime address. We name what your dreams have been working on, and we move the work from your sleeping mind to your waking one. The dream stops being recruited because the integration has somewhere else to happen.

Your mornings get returned to you.
