The world isn't reaching you and you've been going through the motions and the numbness has been the only thing keeping you upright.

What this looks like

The thing happened. You handled it. Or you didn’t, and you got through somehow. Since then, the world hasn’t quite reached you. You go through the motions. You smile when expected. You’re not crying, you’re not feeling much of anything. The numbness has been useful. It’s also been costing you. You don’t know how to come back without losing the protection it’s been providing.

The numb isn’t an absence. It’s a wall that was built for a reason. The reason was real. The wall has outlived it.

Why the numb is functional

You very likely got through the event by switching off whatever you couldn’t afford to feel at the time. The switching-off was the right call. You couldn’t have functioned otherwise. The system didn’t switch back on once the event ended because the conditions for switching back on weren’t met: the danger may have continued, the support may not have been there, the alternative to numb may have been collapse.

The numbness is doing a job. It’s keeping the unprocessed feelings from arriving all at once. The trying to feel something on purpose runs into the wall because the wall is structural, not voluntary.

The voluntary attempt to make yourself feel things is the trap. Feelings come back when the conditions for them coming back exist, not when you decide they should.

The numbness has been protective. The protection has costs you can’t afford anymore.
